The food, of course!

Well here I am, sitting on the balcony of my apartment in Italy deciding what I should write about, and one topic seems to keep coming popping back in my head.  Can you guess? FOOD, of course! It’s kind of perfect being a Dietetics major and studying here!  One typical custom in the cities and towns of Italy is shopping at food markets.  About once or twice a week, locals go to the markets and pick up a variety of fresh food. Unless you’ve seen an Italian food market before you’re probably thinking what I thought too, “okay, so they go grocery shopping at a market instead of a store-what’s the big deal?” This past week I found out for myself and experienced the famous Rialto food market in Venice.  Venders from all around the area bring in a mix of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood and set up booths smack dab in the middle of the street.  It a pleasurable experience for all your senses.  You hear the people bustling around making exchanges, you see the array of rich colors beaming at you from every direction, you smell the crisp fruit mixed with fresh seafood in the air, and all you want to do is pick up and eat one of  those bright red, juicy strawberries right then and there- but wait! Don’t touch the merchandise! The expectation is to not touch any of the merchandise unless you are told otherwise.  All you have to do is say what you would like, how much and the venders do the rest.  I must admit after that day I will always remember what “posso” in italian meant (“may I…?”). Not only is this an unbelievably cultural event you must see for yourself, it’s an adventure.  Here is a little taste of what I was lucky enough to see in Venice right here….
